Eden Park in Auckland has been a formidable venue for the All Blacks, who have maintained an unbeaten streak of 52 consecutive Tests there since 1994. This remarkable run began with an 18-18 draw against South Africa in 1994. Over the years, the stadium has hosted significant rugby events, including the Rugby World Cup in 2011 and clashes with the British & Irish Lions in 2005 and 2017, alongside numerous Bledisloe Cup victories.
The All Blacks extended their streak in 2025 with two victories: a 24-17 win over South Africa in a Rugby Championship match, followed by a 33-24 triumph against Australia to retain the Bledisloe Cup. The unbeaten record will again be tested when the All Blacks face Ireland in the inaugural Nations Championship at Eden Park.
Ireland Presents a Significant Challenge
The upcoming match against Ireland is being described by some as the All Blacks’ biggest Test of the year so far. Both teams enter the sold-out fixture with two wins from two matches in the Nations Championship. The All Blacks have secured victories against France and Italy, while Ireland has overcome Australia and Japan.
Ireland has never defeated the All Blacks at Eden Park, but they have established themselves as strong opponents over the last decade, notably achieving an historic series victory in New Zealand in 2022. Codie Taylor, an experienced All Blacks hooker, highlighted the significance of the match, stating it is the team’s biggest challenge to date. He acknowledged Ireland’s strong form and belief in their style of play, anticipating a physically demanding Test.
All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie, while acknowledging Eden Park’s history as a fortress, emphasised that past results count for little. He stressed the importance of preparation and mindset when facing the Irish side, who won a series during their last tour to New Zealand. Rennie noted the healthy respect for Ireland’s ability and their genuine belief in their capacity to win.
Team Preparations and Future Outlook
The All Blacks are aiming for further improvements in their performance, following a mixed showing against France and a better one against Italy. Rennie indicated a focus on balancing attack with kicking options to create counter-attacking opportunities and noted shifts in their defensive play. The team is also addressing set-piece performance, particularly after conceding scrum penalties against Italy.
Regarding player availability, Rieko Ioane has joined the squad after returning from his club, Leinster, due to shoulder issues affecting Leroy Carter and Fehi Fineanganofo. However, Caleb Clarke is expected to start on the left wing. Flanker Luke Jacobson and lock Patrick Tuipulotu are also available for selection. The match against Ireland is expected to be a significant factor in determining whether the All Blacks or the Springboks advance to the Nations Championship final in November.
This fixture will also be the final match before the All Blacks embark on a tour to South Africa, which includes four matches and three Tests against the world champions, with an additional Test scheduled in the United States. Rennie plans to announce an expanded squad of 44 players for this tour approximately seven days after the Ireland Test. Former skipper Scott Barrett remains unavailable due to back surgery, but there is positive news regarding lock Fabian Holland, who is recovering from a dislocated shoulder and is a potential inclusion after a hit-out with Otago.
The rivalry between the All Blacks and Ireland has intensified, including an All Blacks quarter-final victory at the 2023 World Cup. The upcoming Test at Eden Park is scheduled for 7:10 PM NZT on Saturday.
