Argentina defeats England 2-1 to reach World Cup final
Argentina secured a 2-1 victory over England in a thrilling World Cup semi-final, advancing to the final against European champions Spain. The match, held in Atlanta, saw Argentina stage a late comeback after England had taken the lead.
England initially appeared poised to reach their first World Cup final since 1966 when Anthony Gordon scored in the 55th minute. The goal came after a build-up involving Harry Kane and Morgan Rogers, with Gordon converting a low cross past Nahuel Molina.
However, Argentina, the reigning World Cup holders, mounted a strong challenge in the latter stages of the game. Lionel Messi played a pivotal role in their resurgence, setting up Enzo Fernandez for the equaliser in the 85th minute. Fernandez controlled Messi’s pass on the edge of the area before striking it past the goalkeeper.
The tension in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium was palpable, reflecting the deep-rooted rivalry between the two nations. The first half was marked by numerous fouls, including Elliot Anderson receiving a yellow card for a challenge on Messi.
Argentina’s late surge secures victory
With extra time looming, Argentina continued their offensive push. Jordan Pickford made a notable save from a Nico Gonzalez header, and Alexis Mac Allister was denied by the post in the 76th minute. Despite these efforts, Argentina’s persistence paid off.
In the 92nd minute, during stoppage time, Messi delivered an exquisite cross that substitute Lautaro Martinez headed into the net, securing the winning goal for Argentina. This dramatic turnaround sparked widespread celebrations among the Argentinian players and fans, leaving England deflated.
The victory means Argentina will have the opportunity to win back-to-back World Cups, a feat not achieved since Brazil in 1962. Messi is set to become only the second player, after Cafu, to appear in three World Cup finals. This upcoming final will also mark Messi’s first competitive match against Spain.
England’s journey ends in disappointment
For England, the defeat was a significant disappointment, ending their hopes of reaching a World Cup final for the first time in 60 years. Key players for Thomas Tuchel’s side, including Jude Bellingham and captain Harry Kane, were unable to prevent the late collapse.
England’s players, many of whom slumped to the turf at the final whistle, will now travel to Miami to face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday. This match is generally viewed as one neither team desires to contest.
Individual performances for England were assessed, with several players receiving positive ratings despite the loss. Jordan Pickford made an excellent save but was eventually beaten by Fernandez’s strike. Reece James delivered a quality performance both defensively and offensively, though the defence ultimately tired.
John Stones and Marc Guehi provided a calming presence in defence, with Guehi delivering a solid performance. Djed Spence continued his impressive form, offering pace and defensive prowess, including a memorable last-ditch tackle to stop Simeone. Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice were instrumental in midfield, with Rice’s powerful run contributing to England’s opening goal. Bellingham maintained a continuous threat, and Morgan Rogers provided the assist for Gordon’s goal.
Substitutes introduced by Tuchel, such as Ezri Konsa, Nico O’Reilly, Dan Burn, Ivan Toney, and Marcus Rashford, were unable to alter the outcome. Konsa was part of a defence that conceded two late goals after England shifted to a back five to try and secure the win. The final will be held at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday.
