England captain Harry Kane believes team can reach another level
England captain Harry Kane has stated that the national team possesses an “another level we can reach” as they continue their pursuit of a World Cup title, a feat not achieved since 1966. This sentiment follows their 2-1 victory over Norway in the quarter-finals, a match that required extra time.
The team is now preparing for a semi-final fixture against Argentina, scheduled for Wednesday in Atlanta. Following the quarter-final win, manager Thomas Tuchel expressed dissatisfaction with England’s performance, describing it as “sloppy” with “a lot of technical mistakes” and lacking sufficient speed and repetition. He also commented that the team “got lucky.”
Kane on Tuchel’s Criticism
Kane, who has scored six goals in the current tournament and is England’s joint top goalscorer alongside Jude Bellingham, suggested that Tuchel’s frustrations stemmed from the team’s inability to replicate their training ground form in matches. Kane noted that Tuchel “just wants to see that version of us” given the quality of players and their attacking capabilities.
The captain acknowledged that playing against strong opposition makes consistent high performance challenging. He believes Tuchel is attempting to extract the best from the squad, and the players themselves recognise their potential for improvement. Kane admitted that while the team has shown glimpses of their capability, they have not yet achieved the full control they desire.
Despite the criticism, Kane emphasised the positive aspect of reaching a semi-final while still feeling there is room for improvement. He stated that the team is “showing a lot of good things” and that the situation should not be overly dramatised. The Bayern Munich striker also highlighted the team’s defensive efforts against Norway as a positive.
Bellingham’s Perspective
While Kane largely agreed with Tuchel’s assessment, Bellingham, who scored both of England’s goals in the 2-1 victory, offered a different viewpoint. Bellingham described the match as a “tough shift” for the players, acknowledging the challenging conditions and the calibre of the opposing team, which included players like Erling Haaland, Martin Ødegaard, Antonio Nusa, and Alexander Sørloth.
Bellingham’s comments suggested that Tuchel might not fully appreciate the difficulties of playing in such conditions against strong opponents. He expressed high praise for his teammates’ efforts. The win against Norway, achieved after extra time in Miami, was considered a significant result in England’s World Cup history.
Looking Ahead to the Semi-Final
England’s progression to the semi-finals marks only the fourth time they have reached this stage, having previously lost to West Germany in 1990 and Croatia in 2018. The team has also experienced defeats in recent European Championship finals, losing to Italy on penalties in 2021 and to Spain two years ago.
Kane described the current period as an “extremely successful era” for the national team, noting their consistent presence in semi-finals and finals. He identified winning a major tournament as the “missing piece.” The team has been together for six weeks, demonstrating strong desire, and Kane stressed the need for an even greater push in the final stages of the tournament. The semi-final against Argentina will take place on Wednesday in Atlanta.
