LeBron James‘ free agency decision for the upcoming 2026-27 NBA season is causing delays in the league’s schedule finalisation, according to commissioner Adam Silver. James, an unrestricted free agent, has yet to announce where he will play his 24th season, impacting key dates for the league.
Silver publicly acknowledged the situation, stating that James’ choice influences how the schedule is set, particularly for opening week and Christmas Day games. He expressed a desire for James to make his announcement soon so the league can proceed with its plans.
During a live episode of The Shop for Fanatics Fest, James addressed the commissioner’s comments, calling it “crazy” that the NBA is delaying the schedule release until he decides his next team. However, he made it clear that he would not be revealing his decision during the event, stating, “We don’t have an announcement to make just yet, guys.”
James’ decision-making process
Despite the pressure from the league, James appears content to take his time in making a decision. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the four-time NBA champion is “getting closer and closer to making a decision.” Charania identified the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and Philadelphia 76ers as the top candidates to sign him.
James also participated in a live episode of his Mind the Game podcast with Indiana Pacers star guard Tyrese Haliburton at Fanatics Fest, where he again avoided disclosing his plans for the upcoming season. The 41-year-old remains a significant draw for the league, and his decision is expected to shape both the championship race and the league’s television schedule.
The 2026-27 season could potentially be James’ last, which may explain his deliberate approach to choosing his next team. Silver noted that teams and networks are actively contacting the league, eager to finalise the schedule, but they must wait for James’ announcement.
League investigations continue
In other league news, the NBA has initiated a formal investigation into the Milwaukee Bucks regarding the free-agency signing of guard Gary Trent Jr. The league is examining whether the franchise violated collective bargaining rules by having a prohibited “prior agreement” in place before Trent officially became a free agent. Such a violation, if proven, could lead to significant penalties for the Bucks.
Trent, who is 27, signed a four-year, $64 million (US) contract with the Bucks this off-season. This move followed his decision to opt out of the second year of his previous deal. His scoring output in the 2025-26 season was 8.1 points per game on 38.7 per cent shooting, which was his lowest since his rookie campaign with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2018-19.
Trent had previously joined Milwaukee on a veteran minimum contract in 2024, where he impressed with 11.1 points per game and a strong playoff performance. He then signed a two-year, $7.5 million extension before last season, which included a player option he declined to become an unrestricted free agent.
According to Charania, rival executives had anticipated Trent’s return to Milwaukee for several months, and at least one rival team had explored acquiring him via a sign-and-trade. The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement strictly forbids teams from reaching agreements with free agents before the designated negotiating period, making any evidence of a prior arrangement a serious matter.
The league has a history of taking action in similar cases, such as in 2000 when the Minnesota Timberwolves were stripped of draft picks and Joe Smith’s contract was voided due to an illegal agreement. This investigation is not the only active probe by the NBA.
The league is also continuing its investigation involving the Los Angeles Clippers and Kawhi Leonard. Commissioner Silver expressed hope that this matter would be resolved before the start of the new season. Charania, however, reported that the process is still expected to take several more weeks before a resolution is reached, indicating that the Kawhi Leonard deal is currently paused.
