Favourites secure comprehensive wins in Nations Championship round two
Round two of the Nations Championship saw several favoured teams secure decisive victories. South Africa, England, and Ireland all recorded wins, with South Africa overcoming Scotland, England dominating Fiji, and Ireland defeating Japan.
Springboks hold off Scottish challenge
South Africa secured a 42-28 victory against Scotland in Pretoria, despite making 10 changes to their squad from the previous week’s match against England. The Springboks scored six tries in a hard-fought contest. Scotland, despite their efforts, were unable to capitalise on several opportunities and remain without a win in South Africa after eight attempts.
The score was level at 14-14 at halftime. Early in the second half, South Africa’s replacement lock Ben-Jason Dixon received a yellow card for head contact at a ruck. However, Scotland did not manage to score during this period. South Africa then broke the game open with three tries around the hour mark. Elrigh Louw, Damien Willemse, and Zac Porthen all crossed the try line, establishing a 21-point lead for the Springboks.
Scotland responded with tries from Josh Bayliss and scrumhalf Ben White, giving themselves a chance. However, Jesse Kriel sealed Scotland’s fate with a sixth try for South Africa after collecting a grubber kick from Handre Pollard. Scotland’s captain, Sione Tuipulotu, delivered an all-round performance, gaining 72 metres from 14 carries and making two clean breaks. Fly-half Finn Russell also showcased his attacking skills, creating several try-scoring opportunities and converting four kicks.
Despite the loss, Scotland’s coach Gregor Townsend noted the team’s progress, stating, "The amount of opportunities the players created through work and skill and intelligence –we’ve got to take more to beat the world champions. So that’ll be the frustrating element, because we don’t get to play South Africa here very often. But we’ve come a long way this season. Today was another step forward."
England and Ireland secure bonus-point wins
In Liverpool, England achieved a dominant 73-8 victory over Fiji, scoring 11 tries. This result at the Hill Dickinson Stadium marked an end to England’s run of five consecutive test defeats. England was leading 35-3 at halftime. Fiji played the second half with 14 men after scrum-half Simione Kuruvoli was sent off for kicking out at England prop Ellis Genge.
Henry Pollock, a second-half substitute, scored a hat-trick for England. Other try scorers included Marcus Smith, captain Jamie George, Guy Pepper, Benhard Janse van Rensburg, and Seb Atkinson in the first half. In the second half, Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, Henry Slade, and Noah Caluori also scored tries, with fly-half Fin Smith converting nine kicks.
Ireland prepared for their upcoming test against the All Blacks at Eden Park with a 36-20 bonus-point win over Japan in Newcastle, Australia. This victory secured a full haul of 10 points from their opening two games in the new global competition. Coach Andy Farrell also provided debuts to four players during the match.
Japan, who had defeated Italy the previous weekend, remained competitive, trailing by only six points with 10 minutes left in the game. Farrell expressed relief at the win, stating, "Delighted to get the win for all sorts of reasons, the four debutants and all the changes etc and because Japan are a good side that put us under pressure." He added that the scoreline flattered Ireland but was pleased with the team’s persistence.
