Nations Championship round two sees favourites secure comprehensive wins
In the second round of the Nations Championship, several favoured teams secured significant victories. South Africa defeated Scotland 42-28 in Pretoria, while England achieved a 73-8 win over Fiji in Liverpool. Ireland also claimed a bonus-point victory against Japan with a 36-20 scoreline in Newcastle, Australia.
South Africa, despite making 10 changes to their squad from their previous match against England, managed to overcome a determined Scotland side. The Springboks scored six tries in total. The match was level at 14-14 at halftime, and Scotland had opportunities to capitalise, particularly when South Africa‘s replacement lock Ben-Jason Dixon received a yellow card early in the second half for head contact. However, Scotland failed to score during this period.
It took South Africa nearly 20 minutes in the second half to enter Scotland‘s 22-metre line. Once they did, replacement loose forward Elrigh Louw scored, shifting the momentum. Centre Damien Willemse and replacement prop Zac Porthen then added further tries, establishing a 21-point lead for the Springboks. Scotland attempted a comeback with tries from Josh Bayliss and scrumhalf Ben White, but centre Jesse Kriel sealed the win for South Africa with their sixth try, following a grubber kick from flyhalf Handre Pollard.
Scotland‘s head coach Gregor Townsend expressed a mix of pride and frustration, noting that his team had never scored four tries against South Africa before. He highlighted the missed opportunities, especially during the period when South Africa was down to 14 men. Townsend felt his side should have been more clinical in attack, despite their two strong comebacks during the match. He also mentioned that he believed his team could have won the game with 10 minutes remaining.
In Liverpool, England ended a streak of five consecutive test defeats by comprehensively beating Fiji 73-8 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Second-half substitute Henry Pollock was a standout performer, scoring a hat-trick. England ran in a total of 11 tries. They led 35-3 at halftime and benefited from Fiji being reduced to 14 men for the entire second half after scrum-half Simione Kuruvoli was sent off for kicking out at England prop Ellis Genge.
England‘s first-half try scorers included Marcus Smith, captain Jamie George, Guy Pepper, Benhard Janse van Rensburg, and Seb Atkinson. In the second half, in addition to Pollock‘s three tries, Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, Henry Slade, and Noah Caluori also crossed the try line. Flyhalf Fin Smith had a commanding game, kicking nine conversions.
Meanwhile, Ireland secured a bonus-point win against Japan in a scrappy encounter in Newcastle, Australia. The 36-20 victory saw Ireland score five tries, earning them a full haul of 10 points from their opening two games in the new global competition. Coach Andy Farrell used the match to give debuts to four players.
Japan, despite the loss, showed an impressive performance, trailing by only six points with 10 minutes left in the game. This followed their victory over Italy in the previous weekend. Coach Eddie Jones‘s influence was evident in their progression against the side ranked third in the world. Farrell expressed relief at the win, acknowledging Japan as a strong side that put his team under pressure. He noted that the scoreline flattered Ireland, but was pleased with the group’s resilience.
Ireland‘s victory serves as preparation for their upcoming test against the All Blacks at Eden Park next week.
