Squad Depth and Emerging Talent
The current Springboks squad demonstrates considerable depth across all positions. It is suggested that the team could field at least four world-class starting XVs capable of competing with any tier one nation. This depth is evident in positions such as tighthead prop, where players like Thomas du Toit, Wilco Louw, Carlu Sadie, and Zachary Porthen are all part of the group.

Former Springboks coach Nick Mallett commented on the decision to release Papier, suggesting that while Papier possesses significant pace, the coaching staff might be prioritising speed to the breakdown and ball clearance. Mallett believes that players like Herschel Jantjies, who also remains with the team, demonstrate this quality effectively. Jantjies earned his first appearance for the side since 2023, coming off the bench against Wales.
The released players, despite the opportunity to play against the All Blacks, may still feel disappointed, as the 43 players retained in the squad are considered to be at the forefront of Erasmus’s plans for the series.
