Luai’s Departure from Wests Tigers
Jarome Luai, the departing captain of Wests Tigers, has spoken publicly for the first time since the club informed him he could leave a year earlier than planned. He admitted to being surprised by the decision but denied any rumours of a falling out with coach Benji Marshall.
Luai was initially expected to remain with the Tigers for another season before joining the PNG Chiefs in 2028. However, the club opted to release him two years into his five-year deal, leading to his move to Parramatta Eels for 2027 before his planned move to the Chiefs.
The five-eighth stated that while his time at the Tigers has not unfolded as anticipated, his relationship with Marshall remains strong. He highlighted his respect for Marshall’s dedication to the club and team, noting their transparent communication and ability to have difficult conversations. Luai emphasised that a business decision would not impact their personal relationship.
Luai acknowledged that it took some time to process the club’s request for his early departure. He described the news as a “shock” but recognised the business aspect of professional sports. He expressed support for the club’s decision, understanding that it provides opportunities for other players, particularly in the halves, and he did not wish to be an obstacle to their success.
Impact on Team Performance
The Tigers’ performance has seen a decline since late April, when Luai confirmed he would activate a get-out clause in his contract to join the Chiefs. The club, which was previously in third place, has since won only two games, dropping ten spots on the ladder and moving closer to being out of finals contention.
When questioned about whether his decision to sign with PNG contributed to the team’s dip in form, Luai did not shy away from the possibility. He stated that if his decision to leave the club 18 months in advance affected anyone, he would accept responsibility for it. He also noted that results have not been favourable for the team since then.
Luai clarified that he was not seeking to justify or explain his actions but was present to support the club and its decisions. He asserted that he and the club are united for the remainder of the season, despite some challenging discussions with Marshall. He added that he holds no grudges and is focused on adapting, moving forward, and enjoying his football.
He also addressed the selection process, indicating that if he is not performing, he is open to other players being given a chance. Conversely, if he is considered the best option, he expects to be included. Luai has been named at five-eighth for the upcoming crucial match against the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium.
